The FLA Process

FLA is governed by a Board of Directors which includes equal representation (six members each) from its university and college, company and NGO participants. By having all the players at the table, FLA is able to marshal the combined power of these constituencies to change factory behavior and put in place sustainable change in these communities that has workers’ rights at its center. Having big, brand-name companies like Nike and Reebok at the table is one of FLA’s major strengths. They have the economic muscle to make the changes that we all want. Affiliated NGOs expand the FLA’s reach and effectiveness by bringing new ideas for greater accountability to the table.

These leading brands have made a commitment that their business practices will embrace not simply positive labor practices, but the tenets of the FLA Workplace Code of Conduct which mandates acceptance of the most critical elements of workplace and worker protections. It also means that they commit to allowing unannounced independent audits of the factories they use throughout the world. The FLA inspection and verification process is a stringent method of ensuring that FLA participating manufacturers hold themselves to the highest standards of accountability and transparency.
